A few of my favorite things 2024: Caley Fretz

Ceramic Speed UFO drip wax.

Don’t tell Dave, but I’m a convert to wax.

We have somewhat unique trail conditions here in southwest Colorado, and they’re not great for chains. Particularly in mid-summer when the sun has baked the trails into a fine dust, every non-wax lube I’ve tried either gunks everything up or is gone (and I mean GONE, as in squeaking) within an hour or two. Wax is the best solution.

I still can’t be bothered to hot wax. For a few seasons, I used Squirt. It did the job reasonably well, stuck around a lot longer than most dry lubes, and was cheap, but it left a lot of buildup over time.

This summer I sprung for some of the higher-end stuff. UFO lasts just as long as Squirt did (3-4 rides when the dust is at its worst) but leaves almost nothing behind. I apply after a ride, never right before, and my drivetrain stays sparkly. I appreciate fewer drivetrain cleanings and, I imagine, longer component life. Worth the extra cost. And no faffing about with crockpots.

One of the best drip lubes on the market

This is an excellent choice as drip lubricants go, and CeramicSpeed UFO Drip in its various forms has been a leader in this area for a while and the latest All Conditions formula appears to build on this. 

The performance is excellent, clean, fast and protective with low wear rates. You will just need to decide if the reapplication intervals suit your needs and riding. If you're looking for a drip lube and want one of the best, you could do an awful lot worse than use this.

CeramicSpeed's UFO maintenance products will keep your drivetrain clean and running smoothly. The UFO Drivetrain Cleaner effectively removed dirt and grime, leaving the chain spotless. The UFO Drip Wax for Wet Conditions is the toughest one they make and is also suitable for dry, dusty conditions. While the curing process requires an overnight wait, the transparent coating didn't gather dust as quickly as other lubes, keeping the chain clean and silent even after several rides. Although the products are relatively expensive and the wax application process requires planning ahead, the performance is there if you're looking for that extra edge.

Ceramicspeed’s UFO Drip Wet Conditions name is self-explanatory but what’s not as apparent is that it’s claimed to be the “world’s fastest lube”. I'll save the watts saved per grams of lubricant measurements for another time, but in the real world I can confirm it’s one of the least-gunky wet lubes, and doesn’t disappear on long rides in extreme conditions.

How to apply UFO Drip Wet:

Thoroughly shake bottle before use.

For new chains or the first application, start with a fully clean and dry chain. Apply UFO Drip Wet Conditions chain coating directly to the chain rollers over the cassette while rotating the chain slowly to coat the entire length of the chain twice. Next, apply UFO coating to the inside of the chain, along the rollers on the bottom span over the chain and coat the entire length of the chain twice. A complete coating will use about 8ml, or an 8-gram difference by weight. For best penetration, continue rotating the cranks for 30 to 60 seconds to ensure the wax can get down between the chain rollers and links. For best durability and clean performance, let the UFO chain coating dry overnight. It is not suggested to wipe off the wax from the surface of the chain.

It is always suggested after wet riding conditions to clean the chain and reapply a fresh UFO chain coating. If it has been a dry ride, wipe off any surface dust with a clean towel and apply UFO coating to the chain links above the cassette along the length of the chain twice.

Keep it out of direct sunlight and in a temperature range of 5-30 degrees Celsius (30-85 Fahrenheit). – do not freeze

UFO Drivetrain Cleaner

Shake well before use and keep out of direct sunlight. DO NOT APPLY TO DISC BRAKE PADS.

Use by spraying UFO Drivetrain Cleaner to your chain, cassette, and chainrings and scrub with a brush to break down surface contaminants, waxes, or grease. Let sit for 3-5 minutes for the best results. Rinse thoroughly with water. UFO Drivetrain cleaner is activated with water and will turn milky white first and then when the chain is clean, the water will be clear again.

It is important to fully rinse all the UFO Drivetrain Cleaner off and allow the chain to completely dry before adding a UFO Drip chain coating.

Store out of direct sunlight

UFO Drivetrain Cleaner is safe to use in an ultrasonic cleaner from 40-60 degrees Celsius.

UFO Drip All Conditions

How to apply UFO Drip All Conditions:

For standard reapplication, wipe off any surface dust with a clean towel and apply UFO coating to the chain links above the cassette along the length of the chain twice.

If the drivetrain has been contaminated, the bike has been washed, or ridden in wet conditions we suggest a full clean and reapplication following the first application guidelines. If you ride in the wet often, we recommend the UFO Drip Wet Conditions.
